at 2:00 p.m
Speaker: Native American activist Jean Ann Day

Leonard Peltier is a Native American activist wrongfully accused in 1975 in connection with the shooting deaths of two agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Government documents show that, without any evidence at all, the FBI decided from the beginning of its investigation to 'lock Peltier into the case'.

U.S. prosecutors knowingly presented false statements to a Canadian court to extradite Mr. Peltier to the U.S. The statements were signed by a woman who was forced by FBI agents to say she was an eyewitness. The government has long since admitted that the woman was not present during the shootings.

Meanwhile, in a separate trial in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mr. Peltier's co-defendants were acquitted by reason of self defense. Had Leonard been tried with his co-defendants, he also would have been acquitted.

Unhappy with the outcome of the Cedar Rapids trial, prosecutors set the stage for Mr. Peltier's conviction. His trial was moved to an area known for its anti-Indian sentiment—Fargo, North Dakota. The trial judge had a reputation for ruling against Indians, and a juror is known to have made racist comments during Mr. Peltier's trial.

FBI documents prove that the U.S. government went so far as to manufacture the so-called murder weapon, the most critical evidence in the prosecution's case. A ballistics test proved, however, that the gun and shell casings entered into evidence didn't match. The FBI hid this fact from the jury. Mr. Peltier was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life terms. According to court records, the United States Attorney who prosecuted the case has twice admitted that no one even knows who fired the fatal shots.

Leonard Peltier is 67 years old and in poor health. An accomplished author and artist, Mr. Peltier is renowned for his humanitarian achievements. In 2009, Leonard was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the sixth consecutive year.

Although the courts have acknowledged evidence of government misconduct—including forcing witnesses to lie and hiding ballistics evidence reflecting his innocence—Mr. Peltier has been denied a new trial on a legal technicality. Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, 55 Members of Congress and others—including a judge who sat as a member of the court in two of Mr. Peltier’s appeals—have all called for his immediate release.

The Courts may not be able to act but Barack Obama, as President, can. Please join with us to free an innocent man. On February 4, 2012, tell Obama to grant clemency to Leonard Peltier.

Toronto: 19th Annual Traditional Prayer Vigil Forum and Feast for Leonard Peltier

19th Annual Traditional Prayer Vigil Forum and Feast for Leonard Peltier
February 6, 2012 - 1:00-6:00 p.m.
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto

Frank and Anne Dreaver of the Canadian Human Rights Committee for Justice and Freedom for Leonard Peltier (formerly LPDCC) and the Indigenous Education Network (IEN) of OISE/UT invite you to attend the 19th Annual Traditional Prayer Vigil in honour of the people’s struggle to free Leonard Peltier, North America’s longest-serving, Indigenous political prisoner. February 6th commemorates Leonard’s sacrifice of 36 years of false imprisonment.

Leonard Peltier was wrongfully convicted in the deaths of two FBI agents, following his false extradition from Canada to the U.S. in 1976. No evidence exists to support his conviction. On the contrary, there is massive evidence of wrongdoing and complicity. Despite this, Leonard’s numerous appeals continue to be denied. On October 25, 2000, the Hon. Justice Fred Kaufman, Q.C., concluded that Leonard should never have been extradited from Canada on the basis of what was discovered to be fabricated evidence. Canada has played a large role in Leonard's case, and has a duty to correct its wrong by supporting a humanitarian appeal to the Canadian government, and a request for clemency to President Obama. Join us in our search for justice. The truth and support of the people will one day set Leonard Peltier free!

Speakers and discussion taking place on the 7th Floor, Peace Lounge of the OISE building.

Opening provided by Elder, Howard Elijah - Oneida Nation

Chippewa Travellers, Aniishinaabeg Family Drum - Neyaashingaming First Nation (Cape Croker)

Traditional Feast will be provided for everyone at 5 pm.

(Un) Occupy Movement: Albuquerque to Santa Fe for Leonard Peltier

Members of the (Un) Occupy Albuquerque Movement spent three days walking from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, and arrived at the Occupy Santa Fe site this Sunday evening. This effort was undertaken in solidarity with the Leonard Peltier Walk for Human Rights which left Alcatraz, CA, on December 18, 2011, and will end in Washington, DC, on May 18, 2012. The walkers from (Un) Occupy were met with enthusiastic support from the public all along the length of their journey. The Governor of the Pueblo of San Felipe, Anthony Ortiz, provided a welcoming escort, safe camping area and facilities for the group on Saturday. Members of the Pueblos of Santa Domingo, Cochiti and Santa Ana stopped to voice their support and gave gifts to the walkers.

The (Un) Occupy Albuquerque Movement has joined the Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee in requesting that the New Mexico State Legislature endorse the historic unanimous resolution passed by the National Congress of American Indian calling upon President Obama to grant clemency to Leonard Peltier. Further, the (Un) Occupy Movement has requested that the New Mexico State Legislature pass a similar resolution calling for freedom for Mr Peltier.

As individual fingers we can easily be broken, but all together we make a mighty fist. -- Sitting Bull

March, rally for Leonard Peltier in Tacoma

February 4 will be an international day in solidarity with Leonard Peltier, and a Northwest regional march and rally will be held in Tacoma. This march is answering the call by the Leonard Peltier Defense Organizing (LPDOC) Committee for marches and rallies to be held on this day around the world in support of clemency for Leonard Peltier.

Of all the regional marches in Tacoma, 16 since 1992, this is the most important one yet. The New Leonard Peltier Clemency Campaign is building and public support is critical. If you are a regular supporter, you are asked to join in again. If you are a new supporter who has thought about supporting Leonard Peltier, now is the time to do it. This effort needs the help of everyone.

The march begins at noon at Portland Avenue Park (on Portland Avenue between East 35th and East Fairbanks.) From there, the march travels through downtown Tacoma for a rally at the U.S. Federal Courthouse, 1717 Pacific Ave.

The rally will be co-emceed by Matilaja, a Yu’Pik Eskimo from Mountain Village Alaska, and member of N.W. AIM since 1973, friend of Leonard Peltier for more than 30 years and member of Tacoma Chapter LPDOC; and Steve Hapy, a longtime Leonard Peltier and Native struggles activist and organizer with the Tacoma chapter of LPDOC.

We need people to forward our e-mail statements. We need people to share on Facebook information on the march. Our marches are not about one group but rather they are the work of all Peltier supporters in our region.

Leonard needs resolutions for clemency from Tribes, Unions, Human Rights Organizations and others. See a sample resolution at: www.whoisleonardpeltier.info/resolution.htm.

Influence Avaaz to Support Leonard Peltier

http://avaaz.org

With over 10 million members worldwide, Avaaz is a campaigning community bringing people-powered politics to decision-making worldwide.

If you're not a member, go to http://avaaz.org and join.

Each year, Avaaz sets overall priorities through all-member polls. Campaign ideas are polled and tested weekly to 10,000-member random samples. Only initiatives that find a strong response are taken to scale. Campaigns that do reach the full membership are then super-charged by, often, hundreds of thousands of Avaaz members taking part within days or even hours.

We have an opportunity to get Avaaz to take up a campaign for Leonard's freedom. Peltier supporters who are Avaaz members should go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/January2012poll?cl=1490822116&v=11894 to take a poll regarding the issues you think Avaaz should address in 2012. Urge Avaaz to stand with Leonard Peltier.

Help spread the word and get other Avaaz members around the world to support freedom for Leonard Peltier.
