Dear IITC Family, Friends and Supporters,

It is with a heavy heart that the IITC announces the postponement of this year’s Indigenous Peoples Day Sunrise Gathering scheduled for this Monday, Oct. 14, on Alcatraz Island. This is the first time we have not held this gathering in almost 30 years. As you probably know, the US Federal Government is currently in “shutdown mode”. This includes plac
es and lands which are under the jurisdiction of the National Parks Service, including Alcatraz Island. As a result of the shutdown, the ferryboats to the island are not running and we do not have other options at this late date to be able to safely transport several hundred participants across the San Francisco Bay in the dark early morning hours. We have considered other sites as well, but there was the challenge of finding space and getting the word out in time. After careful consideration and lots of consultation, including with the spiritual leaders from California who guide the event, postponement seemed the more feasible option.

The IITC would like to thank the coordinators, contributors and sponsors for their support, dedication and hard work. We look forward to regrouping stronger than ever for Indigenous Peoples Thanksgiving Annual Sunrise on Alcatraz, Nov. 28, 2013.

We know that the Bay Area Indian Community will still come together to commemorate the Day of Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and 521 years of resistance and survival. We encourage everyone to attend the other events and gatherings organized by Indigenous Peoples in the Bay Area this weekend (October 12-14). We will post these events on our timeline.

Even if you can’t make any of these events, we hope you join us in offering our prayers and support for the many ongoing Indigenous struggles throughout the hemisphere, and thanks for our continued survival and resistance as Indigenous Peoples and Nations.

Best to all, and thanks for your interest and continued support.

Andrea Carmen, IITC Executive Director
